For the last 26 years of my life, I didn’t like to wake up in the morning and hit the snooze every morning. Recently, I changed that. Now I am excited and happy to wake up in the morning, even if I went to sleep late.

In the past two weeks I realized every day’s productivity and mood depends on how I start my mornings. Before I adopted this new routine, as I woke up I hit the snooze button a few times and as I opened my eyes I immediately started to browse all social media platforms and messages. This way, I couldn’t focus on what was my targets for the day, for the week and my thoughts were messy. Now I completely changed that.
Rule #1: Wake up when you hear the first alarm, make your bed and go to the bathroom to freshen up, wash your teeth. I adopted the so-called 5 seconds rule and when I feel like not doing something I just count back from 5 till 1 and I do it. No more excuses.
When waking up to my phone, it is the easiest for me if I put a rather slow alarm, but place my phone on the other side of the room so I will need to stand up to turn it off.
Making my bed is also a kind of declaration that I am not coming back again 🙂
Rule #2 Start every day for at least 30 minutes or even up to 1 hour without internet, tv, music, etc. This has helped me so much. Now I usually wake up earlier than my husband, to have the morning for myself, but if he is awake, I kindly ask him not to disturb me, no loud music, etc.
Rule#3 Drink a cup of warm tea (or anything 🙂 ) and write your 5 Minute Journal! I saw different variations, for me it works best if I write the 3 lines for each of the 3 things:
- What am I thankful for?
- What would make today great?
- Today’s Self-Affiliation (positive things that you like about yourself).
I try to always write very specific small things instead of being too general. In addition, on the left hand side I have an empty page. I usually start to write ideas, thoughts, things to do for the day, whatever comes out. Usually a lot of great ideas, birthday presents and sometimes it even helps me to remember what was I dreaming about.
P.s.: I also write 5 Minutes Journal in the evening, answering 3 lines to these two questions: What made today great? What could have been better?
Rule#4 Do a few minutes of stretching, walking or if you like, meditate. I tried meditation, but I am not ready for it yet, I just feel like too thoughts running through my head and I start writing.
Rule#5 Do at least 10 minutes of something that you truly enjoy. This can be more sports, watching out of the window, playing with your pet, drawing, cooking, anything you like. In my case, I usually read a chapter from my book or practice some Chinese Character writing.
By this time 30 minutes has passed, if I have time, I keep on spending time without my phone or if I need to go somewhere, I get ready.
Rule#6 Don’t leave your home without eating breakfast or taking breakfast with you. I think many people don’t feel hungry right away after waking up, and one of my basic rule about diet is not to eat when not hungry 🙂 If you are not hungry when waking up, definitely take some food with you, the easiest way is to prepare it the night before.
Based on my personal experience, I encourage everybody to spend the first 30 minutes of their day without connecting to the internet. Even if it means waking up 30 minutes earlier 🙂
